Salix viminalis (Superba)
z. 3 – 10 ht. 9′ / 30′ (coppiced / tree-form)
A selected male clone used by basket makers for weaving. Stems are a reddish-green colour. Highly ornamental with shiny stems and yellowish catkins, the ‘viminalis’ willows can be planted in wetter areas than other willows. They also produce lots of nectar and pollen when in bloom attracting bees and butterflies.
Coppice (prune) the stems yearly to produce the long, straight ‘rods’ used for basket weaving. Coppice only every second or third year to produce larger and stronger wood for wattle fencing.
All Willows are 1-gal. size
