Japanese Walnut (Heartnut) Juglans ailantifolia var. cordiformis
z. 6 -10 ht. 20 – 40 ft.
Sweetest of all the nuts in the walnut family, beautiful heartnut trees produce loads of delicious heart-shaped nuts; more like a macadamia nut than a walnut. These trees make gorgeous ornamental large shade trees and will produce for generations. A second heartnut or walnut tree is needed for pollination. Heatnuts will start to produce much sooner than a walnut – six or seven years as compared to 10 or more.
