Cold-hardy, small to medium-sized purplish-brown figs with strawberry-coloured interior. Flavour is sweet and very rich. Produces a large ‘breba’ (first) crop. High quality fig. This vigorous tree will dependably grow back if the top branches have been winter-killed. On the West Coast, Hardy Chicago needs a warm spot for the figs to ripen well. Well-suited to container culture. Original tree was brought from Mount Etna by Sicilians who settled in the Chicago area.
We recommend that you plant this tree in a protected spot; then mulch fairly heavily around its base and finally protect it with a burlap wrap in mid-Winter for the first few years.
All Fig Trees are large 1-gal size plants.
