‘Hardy Chicago’ is a very cold-hardy tree with small to medium-sized purplish-brown figs with strawberry-coloured interior. Flavour is sweet and very rich. High quality fig. This vigorous tree will dependably grow back (after it is established) if the top branches have been winter-killed. Well suited to container culture. Original tree was brought from Mount Etna by Sicilians who settled in the Chicago area. For the west coast, we recommend that you plant this in a cold-frame or greenhouse as it would prefer the extra heat. Flavour of this fig is one of the best. This is another of the figs that our Eastern Canadian friends should try as it would like your longer summers. (eg. growing it in a pot and bringing it inside for the winter).
If growing this tree in the ground on the West Coast, we recommend that you plant this tree in a sunny and protected spot; then mulch fairly heavily around its’ base. Finally, protect it with a burlap wrap in mid-winter for the first few years.
All Fig Trees are large 1-gallon size plants.
