Heartnut – Japanese Walnut
Juglans ailantifolia var. cordiformis
z. 6 – 10 ht. 20′ – 40′
Sweetest of all the nuts in the Walnut family. Beautiful heartnut trees produce loads of delicious, heart-shaped nuts; shaped more like a macadamia nut than a walnut. These trees make gorgeous shade trees, and will produce for generations. A second heartnut or walnut is recommended for pollination. Heartnut trees will start to produce much sooner than a walnut – six or seven years compared to 10 years or more for a walnut. Makes a wonderful shade tree. Much less juglone allelopathic (less soil toxins) than the walnut.
All Permaculture Plants are 1-gallon sized plants.
