Spartium junceum

z. 7 – 10      ht. 8′ – 12′

Fairly hardy, almost leafless green shrub that produces a mass of very fragrant, yellow 1″ long flowers from the end of June till the end of summer – often continuing blooming until frost in October / November here on the coast. An absolutely beautiful fragrance is produced by these flowers. One flowering shrub can infuse the entire garden with its’ amazing scent. Grows and flowers best in a sunny, protected spot in free-draining soil. It can handle wind and poor soil, and does very well growing by the ocean.

As a nitrogen-fixer, this shrub is used by permaculturists to improve the soil. By growing Spanish Broom near fruit and nut trees, one can fertilize these trees sustainably and indefinitely.  *Please note that Spanish Broom is not related to the dreaded Scotch Broom, being an entirely different species. On the BC coast, Spanish Broom is not in the least invasive.

All Permaculture Plants are 1-gal. size plants
